Your Household Move to New Zealand, Planned From the Start

Perhaps you are returning home after years in the United States, relocating for work or joining family. The practical questions are usually the same: what is worth shipping, how should it be packed, and what needs to happen before it can be delivered?

We coordinate pickup throughout the United States, export packing, shipping and destination services. Your move plan can cover a few selected pieces, an apartment or a complete household, with the scope confirmed in your written estimate.

Complete Relocation Support

What Your New Zealand Move Can Include

01

Survey and Planning

A virtual or in-home survey helps establish shipment volume, access conditions and items that need special handling.

02

Export Packing

Professional wrapping, packing, labeling and inventory preparation for household goods and furniture travelling overseas.

03

Ocean or Air Shipping

We review shared-container, dedicated-container and air options against your volume, destination and priorities.

04

Storage and Crating

Storage can bridge a gap between addresses. Custom crating can be included for suitable fragile or high-value items.

05

Clearance Coordination

Documentation guidance and coordination with destination professionals for customs and biosecurity processing.

06

Delivery Services

Delivery, unloading and agreed placement services, with unpacking and basic reassembly available when included in your estimate.

Choose the Right Method

Choosing How to Ship Your Belongings

The right choice depends on the packed volume and how much flexibility you have. A smaller shipment does not automatically need a whole container, while a full household may justify dedicated space.

Shared-Container Shipping

Groupage allows separate household shipments to share container space. It can suit selected furniture, personal effects and smaller moves. Availability, consolidation time and routing are confirmed for your shipment; departure is not immediate simply because your goods have been collected.

A Dedicated Container

A full container can be appropriate for a larger household or customers who need exclusive container space. We assess the volume and pickup access before recommending container size and loading arrangements.

Air Freight

Air shipping may suit essential items you need sooner. It is generally more expensive than ocean freight and is priced using chargeable weight. Customs, biosecurity and delivery still need to be included in the timeline.

Understanding Your Estimate

What Does Moving to New Zealand Cost?

A useful estimate starts with your actual inventory. Pickup location, packed volume, shipping method, destination access, packing, crating and storage all affect the total. Delivery to a regional address may require different arrangements from delivery within a major city.

Ask for a written scope that identifies origin services, freight and destination services, together with exclusions and any charges payable separately. Inspections, treatment, taxes, levies and storage caused by a clearance delay should be addressed before you book.

Tell Us Where You Are Going

Include your destination postcode, even if your final street address is not confirmed. North Island and South Island destinations can involve different routing and onward delivery arrangements.

Prepare Before Shipping

New Zealand Customs: Documents and Household Effects

Some customers qualify for a concession on used household effects. Eligibility depends on residence documentation, time spent living outside New Zealand and the ownership, use and intended purpose of the goods. Used belongings are not automatically exempt simply because they are part of a move.

New and unused purchases must be declared. Vehicles are assessed separately from the household effects concession. Qualifying for relief from duty and GST also does not remove every possible shipment charge.

Prepare the Paperwork Before Shipping

New Zealand Customs lists the NZCS 218 household items form, passport identification, a packing list, transport documentation, applicable residence documents and the MPI Supplementary Biosecurity Declaration among the clearance documents. Permits and receipts may also be needed for particular items.

Our team helps coordinate the document review with destination professionals so missing information can be identified before arrival.

Review the current New Zealand Customs household effects guidance. Eligibility and charges are determined by the relevant authorities.

Biosecurity Planning

Biosecurity Preparation Belongs on Your Packing List

New Zealand Customs directs household shippers to the Ministry for Primary Industries for biosecurity requirements before shipping. Review your contents early, especially belongings used outdoors and items made from plant or animal materials.

Outdoor Belongings

Flag bicycles, garden tools, camping gear, golf equipment and outdoor furniture during the survey. Ask for current cleaning and declaration instructions before these items are packed.

Food and Natural Materials

Tell your coordinator about food, seeds, plants, wooden objects, woven materials and animal products. Confirm whether each item can travel and whether permits or other conditions apply.

A Clear Inventory

Describe contents accurately and identify items that need review. Keep supporting documents accessible rather than packing them into the shipment.

Biosecurity instructions must be confirmed for the goods you intend to ship. Inspection or treatment may affect cost and timing. Consult New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries and your destination coordinator before packing.

Major Destinations

Delivery Across the North and South Islands

Your final address matters as much as the arrival port. We review destination access and onward transport requirements when preparing the move plan.

Auckland

Household relocation planning for Auckland and surrounding communities, including apartment and residential access requirements.

Wellington

Delivery planning for the Wellington region, with attention to street access, stairs and the distance from the vehicle to the home.

Christchurch

Shipping and destination coordination for Christchurch and onward delivery to other Canterbury addresses.

Hamilton and Tauranga

Move planning for Waikato and Bay of Plenty destinations, with inland transport reflected in the estimate.

Dunedin and Queenstown

South Island destination planning based on your address, shipment volume and the services required at delivery.

Other Destinations

Share your town and postcode so we can review routing, regional delivery and any special access arrangements.

Plan Your Timeline

How Long Will the Move Take?

Plan around the full move, not only the time at sea. Packing, inland transportation, consolidation when applicable, vessel scheduling, border processing and delivery appointments each form part of the timeline.

Ask your coordinator to distinguish the estimated departure date, port arrival and delivery window. A sailing estimate is not a guaranteed date for receiving your belongings at home.

Moving to New Zealand FAQ

Moving to New Zealand: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you collect my belongings anywhere in the USA?

We coordinate international pickup throughout the United States. Provide your ZIP code, inventory and access details so we can confirm arrangements and pricing for your location.

Can I ship just a few pieces of furniture?

Yes. Smaller household shipments can be assessed for shared-container shipping, subject to routing and availability. Air freight may be an option for suitable smaller, urgent shipments.

Will I pay duty or GST on my used household goods?

You may qualify for a household effects concession if you meet New Zealand Customs requirements. Eligibility is conditional. New items and vehicles are treated differently, and levies or service charges can still apply.

What documents will I need?

Expect to prepare passport identification, a detailed packing list, transport documents, the household items customs form and biosecurity declaration. Residence documentation, permits or purchase receipts may also be required.

Should I include outdoor and garden equipment?

Review these items before packing. Tell your coordinator what you intend to send and obtain current MPI instructions on eligibility, cleaning and declarations. Some items may require additional checks or treatment.

Do you deliver to both islands?

We coordinate moves to North Island and South Island destinations. Routing, regional transport and delivery access are reviewed for your specific address and included services.

Can you store my shipment before delivery?

Storage can be arranged as part of your move plan when available. Discuss the likely duration, location, handling and storage charges before booking.

Can I include a car in my move?

A vehicle requires a separate eligibility and compliance review. Confirm New Zealand import, biosecurity, road-entry and tax requirements before booking vehicle transport; household effects eligibility does not establish vehicle eligibility.
